Flexible community transport

What is MiDAS?

MiDAS, administered by the Community Transport Association (CTA), is the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme, which has been the gold standard for enhancing the safety and care of passengers for nearly 30 years. The scheme provides a nationally recognised standard for the assessment and training of drivers to ensure that they have the skills and knowledge to provide safe, legal and comfortable journeys to passengers.

The course is open for all drivers whether professional, paid or volunteers with either a D (vehicles more than 16 passenger seats), D1 (vehicles between 9 and 16 passenger seats) and B (car licence and vehicles between 9 and 16 passenger seats weighing less than 3500Kg or 4250 Kg when fitted with a tail lift or ramp).

What courses are available?

There are 3 course available;

Standard Minibus course for all drivers and is the base for other courses. On successful completion of the course a certificate is awarded which lasts for 4 years and is acceptable throughout the country. Accessible course for the transport for passengers with reduced mobility using a wheelchair.

Refresher A MiDAS certificate lasts for 4 years. By undertaking a MiDAS Refresher course, a driver can renew their certificate for a further 4 years. From 2nd January 2024, drivers requiring a Refresher course will be completing the new course in full.
The above courses are now on-line for the theory, followed by a 1 to 1 follow up to the theory and a driving assessment. After a successful completion of the course, a certificate is issued.
Additionally, there is a classroom course for Car/MPV drivers of vehicles up to 8 passenger seats. For those vehicles used to transport wheelchairs, the above Accessible course would also be required following successful completion of the classroom session.
Other CTA courses include a Smoke evacuation course and Passenger Assistant course for which First and Last Mile CIC are unable to help.

Classroom training is normally at the delegate's site or can be arranged. The use of the delegate's own vehicle is required. First and Last Mile can provide a minibus for drivers who have a D1 licence.

Our current MiDAS DA (Driver Assessor) has been training for over 10 years and is also a tutor with Roadar (Rospa Advanced Drivers and Riders) and a National Observer with IAM Roadsmart.
